ENERGY EFFICIENCY ADVISOR
The Energy Efficiency Advisor is a web-based tool designed to assist companies in these
sectors to reduce energy use and costs by analysing, understanding and improving the
efficiency of the energy using processes.
The toolkit is specifically targeted at the relevant industry sectors and enables users to
reduce energy consumption, reduce costs and make informed decisions on investments.
Supported by Intelligent Energy Europe, the advisor toolkit is provided free of charge by
Project SURFENERGY.
The Energy Efficiency Tool is the main component of the Advisor and is downloaded as
a spreadsheet. It is designed to assist companies in the analysis of their energy and cost
performance to enable forecasts on future energy use, thus providing comparisons between
business as usual and potential scenarios which could be achieved through the
implementation of energy saving techniques.
The Tool requires companies to enter detailed data to produce future energy use forecasts
with the main aim of improving energy performance. It also provides a calculation,
enabling purchasing decisions to be made on new equipment. Other features include:
- Setting up an Energy Management System
- Energy Auditing Requirements
- Measure lists and Key Performance Indicators
- Benchmarking Tool
- Investment Guide
Additional information on Energy Saving Opportunities include:
- Technology Intelligence and Roadmap
- Best Practice Guide
- Benchmarking Methodology
- Ideal Factory Priorities
- Life Cycle Assessment Technologies
The Advisor Tool can be found on the SURFACENERGY web site: www.surfenergy.eu
or for the UK Contact Point (the Surfenergy project co-ordinator at C-Tech Innovation)
web site: www.ctechinnovation.com

Health, Safety & Environment
1. A company was prosecuted by a joint case
brought by the HSE and the Environment
Agency.
The company attempted to mix 22 kg of sodium
cyanide pellets with hydrogen peroxide to make
them less toxic thus attempting to avoid paying a
licensed hazardous waste company to dispose of
the pellets.
An explosion occurred and an employee was
drenched with a hot, toxic chemical solution
resulting in burns to his arms and chest.
The company was fined £12,000 with £14,000 costs.
2. A person was spray-painting in a shed and
accidentally spilled thinners on his trousers. As he
walked across the shed to change, he walked near
to a gas burner, being used to heat the workshop,
his clothes caught fire and he suffered burns to
both his arm and hand, resulting in him being hospitalised
for 16 days.
The Company was fined £20,000 with £6,329 costs.

Copper Development Association
Antimicrobial Copper Reduces Infection Risk.
Results presented at World Health Organisation’s
infection prevention conference by Dr Michael
Schmidt from a comprehensive multi-site clinical
trial in the US demonstrated the use of
antimicrobial copper surface in intensive care unit
rooms resulted in a 40% reduction in the risk of
acquiring a hospital infection. This is the first
time a reduction in infection risk has been
reported in a copper trial.

Start 9.30, Close 16.15
The course aims to cover the basic principles of
exposure assessment, dealing with the technical
concepts and linking in with regulatory
requirements. It is designed for those involved in
chemical safety assessment and communication,
within the context of product stewardship and
with particular focus on the supply regulations,

Automotive Industry & REACH
The Automotive Industry has issued Version 3 of
its Guideline on REACH (AIG) published by the
task force (TF-REACH) on 8th July, formed by
representatives of all major vehicle manufacturers
and the automotive supply chain. The TFREACH
recommends a common schedule and
external communication strategy which will
harmonise the sector’s response to REACH and
avoid the duplication and confusion by taking into
consideration the industry’s specific criteria and
tools. Version 3 is more comprehensive,
providing recommendations on numerous aspects
of the REACH Regulation. Beside a new chapter
on CLP Notification, Version 3 contains advice
regarding the Notification of Substances in
Articles, Authorisation and Restriction procedures
as well as downstream users’ obligations in regard
to Safety Data Sheets, a new chapter on Waste as
well as sector recommendations on how to
prepare for REACH EN-FORCE audits
The AIG will be translated into Chinese, French,
German, Japanese and Korean, so as to assist the
global automotive supply chain in understanding
their REACH obligations while also providing
useful recommendations.
